Manchester City head into the international break with a three-point lead at the top of the Premier League following a frantic 5-3 victory at home against Sunderland on Sunday. Following Arsenal's loss of their 100 per cent record to Brighton a day earlier, Enzo Maresca's side had to work tirelessly to maintain theirs at the Etihad Stadium, as Dutch striker Brian Brobbey netted a hat-trick for the resilient Sunderland.
City took the lead twice through Enzo Fernandez and Rayan Cherki, only for Brobbey to pull Sunderland level on both occasions. A double from Antoine Semenyo pushed City ahead 4-2 before Brobbey scored his third for the visitors, and Erling Haaland eventually added his first ever goal against Sunderland to secure the points in a match featuring suspect defending from both sides.
“If you’re winning at the end, you definitely enjoy it, if you lose, not so much,” said Semenyo. “It was a tough battle today. We knew it would be hard. They’re a very good team … We held on together as a team and we got the three points.”
City opened the scoring in the ninth minute when Fernandez curled a quick free-kick from the right side of the penalty area inside the near post, catching Sunderland goalkeeper Robin Roefs off guard. The advantage lasted only three minutes before Brobbey converted a pass from Enzo Le Fee past Gianluigi Donnarumma to equalize for Sunderland, who had earlier missed a clear chance through Nilson Angulo.
City regained the lead before the half-hour mark when Sunderland lost possession playing out from the back. The ball fell to Semenyo, whose touch allowed Cherki to drill a low shot past Roefs for his third goal of the season. Sunderland responded within five minutes as Le Fee set up Thomas Meunier, whose cutback provided Brobbey with a simple tap-in for his second goal. A VAR check confirmed Ruben Dias played Le Fee onside.
Sunderland's defense faltered again three minutes before halftime, with Semenyo scoring a low shot following a penalty box scramble. Before the break, Haaland missed a chance from an Iliman Ndiaye setup, and Donnarumma tipped a deflected effort from Brobbey over the crossbar.
Sunderland's defense struggled with a through ball from Cherki in the 57th minute, allowing Semenyo to collect the loose ball and score his second and City's fourth into the bottom corner. Sunderland responded instantly again, making it 4-3 two minutes later as Brobbey completed his hat-trick from close range. Regis Le Bris' side nearly equalized when Dias cleared his own mistake off the goalline.
With nine minutes remaining, City secured the result. Substitute Jeremy Doku delivered a pass to Josko Gvardiol, who picked out Haaland at the back post to tap in his fifth league goal of the campaign. Another pass from Doku set up Nico O'Reilly, but Roefs made a strong save, and Sunderland later hit the post in stoppage time.
“It's hard being on the losing side when you're scoring three goals,” said Brobbey. “It was up and down, up and down. Man City are a really good team with lots of quality.”
Elsewhere, Andoni Iraola's return to Bournemouth resulted in a victory secured by Alexander Isak's fourth goal of the season. Isak finished from close range after good work by Cody Gakpo, leaving Liverpool in sixth place, six points behind leaders City. Marco Rose remains without a top-flight win as his team dropped to 17th place with three points.
“It's very important for us to get goals, Alexander Isak included,” said Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk. “It was good win here, a clean sheet and we go to the international break before bracing ourselves for a very intense period. Let's all stay calm and keep working and not get ahead of ourselves.”
In another early fixture, Leeds United drew 0-0 at home against Crystal Palace, moving Leeds up to fifth place while Palace sit 15th with four points.
