Violence flared in the occupied West Bank on Sunday following a suspected shooting attack and a separate vehicle incident, police and military officials reported.

A suspected Palestinian gunman opened fire from a vehicle targeting Israelis gathered at a spring near the settlement of Neve Tzuf, close to Ramallah, according to the Israeli military and police. Emergency medics arrived at the location and found a man inside a car suffering from critical gunshot wounds. He was later pronounced dead at a hospital, police confirmed. The suspect was located several hours afterward at a hospital in Ramallah and subsequently arrested.

Shortly after the initial shooting, the military stated that its forces had eliminated a Palestinian motorist who allegedly attempted a ramming attack against soldiers near the settlement of Ganim, located further north in the West Bank. The military reported that no soldiers sustained injuries during this incident.

Authorities have stated it remains unknown whether these two incidents, which unfolded on the eve of the Jewish holy day of Yom Kippur, share any connection.

In response to the violence, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that he instructed security agencies to heighten their presence, conduct arrests, and pursue offensive operations across the region. Meanwhile, the Palestinian militant group Hamas praised the shooting event, though they did not officially claim responsibility for it.

Violence across the West Bank has seen a steady escalation following the October 7, 2023, attack by Hamas on Israel and the subsequent Israeli military offensive in Gaza. This period of heightened tension has involved a sharp increase in militant settler attacks directed at Palestinians, alongside sweeping Israeli military raids and Palestinian attacks targeting Israelis.
