Three South Korean military officers have sustained injuries following an unexpected explosion in the western sector of the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), located between North and South Korea, according to Seoul’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS). The Ministry of Defence stated that the precise cause of Monday’s blast remains undetermined.

Following the incident, two of the injured officers were promptly evacuated from the area via helicopter, while the third was initially moved by land prior to being airlifted. The Ministry of Defence confirmed that all three individuals are currently receiving medical treatment at a military hospital situated near the capital Seoul.

Incidents involving mine explosions and similar blasts present a persistent danger within and surrounding the DMZ, where remaining devices and suspected stray mines frequently threaten military personnel on both fronts. Stretching 248km (154 miles) in length and 4km (2.5 miles) in width, the DMZ stands as one of the most heavily fortified borders globally. Approximately 2 million land mines remain scattered throughout and adjacent to the border region, which is further secured by combat troops, barbed wire fences, and tank traps on both sides.

The heavily guarded zone originates from the 1950 to 1953 Korean War, which concluded with an armistice rather than a formal peace treaty. Meanwhile, South Korea has expressed mounting anxiety regarding heightened activity from North Korean soldiers near the military demarcation line, as North Korea continues to reinforce its border defenses amid ongoing tensions.
