Cricket season is officially underway, and India is set to deploy nearly its entire roster of top-level talent over the coming weeks in a packed schedule of matches. Tuesday marks a historic occasion as Japan, ranked 41st in the world out of 93 rated teams, hosts the double T20 world champions India.
India, recently overtaken by England for second place in the ICC rankings, has selected a full-strength squad aiming to defend its gold medal at the Asian Games. Prior to their opening match at the Aichi-Nagoya Games on Monday, the Indian team will play a one-off match against Associate side Japan at the Sano International Cricket Ground to help players adjust to local conditions.
The historic Suzuki Cup—the first international encounter between the two nations—will take place at a temporary venue in Sano. Local soil from Sano has been utilized for the main cricket stadium that will host games in Nagoya, while temporary seating has expanded the Sano venue's capacity to approximately 2,000 spectators. This represents a milestone for Japan's cricketing community, as no two teams with such a vast ranking disparity have previously played a bilateral international match.
"I can't wait to just get out there, take on the challenge and I'm really looking forward to it," Japan all-rounder Benjamin Ito-Davis told ICC Digital. "To represent Japan on the global stage and promote cricket in Japan is something I'm really honoured and proud to do. As a team we want to show that we can compete against a team like India and show that Japan spirit, the Japan way, but also play in a fair and respectful way."
For India, this fixture kicks off an exceptionally busy month. Over the weekend, the West Indies will commence a white-ball tour of India featuring ODIs and T20s, while the national team competes at the Asian Games in Japan. Simultaneously, other top-tier Indian players will face a strong Australian team in a home A-team series comprising one-day and multi-day games beginning Tuesday. Meanwhile, the Rest of India squad will face domestic first-class champions Jammu & Kashmir next week, bringing the total to 69 players representing five senior Indian teams across various formats and competitions.
On Monday, India's training session for their inaugural T20 against Japan was cancelled due to heavy rain and stormy weather brought by Typhoon Dujuan, which has also disrupted certain events at the ongoing Asian Games. Having recently swept Afghanistan 3-0 at home, the team management faces another decision regarding whether teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi will feature or remain on the bench.
