Thirteen minutes into La Liga’s Madrid derby, a banner appeared in the Metropolitano Stadium’s south stand declaring: “Ceuta es Espana. Ni se arruga, ni se tapa.” The message addressed a growing controversy involving Real Madrid players Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Junior, and Ibrahima Konate. During a previous match against Elche, these players had worn altered shirts carrying a solidarity message tied to Ceuta, the Spanish enclave at the center of political tensions between Spain and Morocco following a massive influx of migrants.

A record 72,000 migrants crossed from Morocco into Ceuta over two days in late July, overwhelming local resources and sparking a humanitarian crisis. The Spanish NGO Caminando Fronteras reported 141 deaths across both sides of the border in the immediate aftermath. Mbappe, whose parents migrated from Cameroon and Algeria, and Konate, whose parents came from Mali, faced scrutiny over their actions. Mbappe explained that his gesture aimed to acknowledge everyone suffering, including migrants who faced hardship or lost their lives during the crisis. Real Madrid later stated it respected its players' freedom to participate, while Barcelona chose not to wear the shirts prior to their match against Levante.

La Liga president Javier Tebas criticized the three Real Madrid players, stating he did not view the campaign as political. Meanwhile, David Aganzo, president of the Spanish footballers’ union AFE, argued that players need clearer information regarding the initiatives they are asked to support. Despite the tensions during the derby against Atletico Madrid, fans from both rival clubs united for two minutes in chanting in support of Ceuta before the match hostility resumed. Both Mbappe and Vinicius also faced jeers from supporters when the starting lineups were announced.

The campaign originated on September 11 from the Asociacion Valenciana de Empresarios (AVE), a business association chaired by Vicente Boluda, aimed at showing solidarity with Ceuta's residents and promoting social cohesion in Spain. While figures like Spain coach Luis de la Fuente and Real Madrid president Florentino Perez visited Ceuta, journalist Youssef Temsamani noted that the players were placed in a difficult position between politics and solidarity. AD Ceuta football club president Luhay Hamido defended the players' autonomy, pointing out that footballers are sometimes asked to wear items without a full explanation. As the city continues to manage the fallout, local football in Ceuta's neighborhoods offers children a brief escape, with many wearing shirts bearing the names of prominent international players as the community navigates the ongoing crisis.
