Visitors exploring the Abu Simbel Temple complex in southern Aswan recently noticed clusters of bats roosting in the elevated sections and high stone ceilings of the historic monument.
Addressing the situation, an official from the Aswan Antiquities Sector explained to Al-Masry Al-Youm that the presence of bats is a recurring seasonal phenomenon, closely tied to the summer months when the animals seek dark, humid environments.
Authorities have confirmed that the bats have a minimal impact on the ancient reliefs, noting that their numbers remain small and strictly confined to the upper ceiling areas with zero damage reported to the ancient walls, carvings, or reliefs.
To address the issue safely, antiquities authorities are consulting pest management departments regarding non-toxic mitigation strategies that preserve visitor and worker health by avoiding toxic chemicals or strong odors.
Officials are currently evaluating the use of ultrasonic repeller devices to humanely discourage bats from nesting within the sanctuary.
