Visitors touring the Abu Simbel Temple complex in southern Aswan recently observed clusters of bats roosting in the elevated sections and high stone ceilings of the historic monument. Officials from the Aswan Antiquities Sector explained that the appearance of the bats is a recurring seasonal occurrence tied to the summer months, when the animals naturally seek dark and humid environments.
Antiquities authorities have confirmed that the bat population remains small, restricted to the upper ceiling areas, and has caused zero structural or aesthetic damage to the ancient walls, carvings, or reliefs. To address the situation safely, officials are collaborating with pest management departments to implement non-toxic mitigation strategies that protect visitor and worker health while avoiding harsh chemicals or strong odors that could harm the ancient stone. As part of this effort, authorities are currently evaluating the use of ultrasonic repeller devices to humanely deter the bats from nesting.
