Polish law enforcement officers work at the site of a knife attack in Jaroslaw, eastern Poland [AFP]. One person lost their life and four others sustained injuries during a violent knife assault targeting clergy and worshippers at a Catholic monastery in southern Poland.

According to police, a 31-year-old Ukrainian national carried out the stabbing spree at the 17th-century Benedictine abbey in Jaroslaw. The location is situated approximately 30km (19 miles) from the border with Ukraine. The incident occurred on Thursday morning after the suspect had entered Poland from Germany earlier that day.

Investigators reported that the suspect grabbed a weapon from the abbey’s kitchen and proceeded to attack four men and one woman. The victims included a priest inside a confessional.

“Three of the victims are clergy members and two are laypeople; one person has died,” stated prosecutor Bozena Harasz-Wołoszyn. Authorities confirmed that two other victims remained in critical, life-threatening condition. While Polish media outlets identified the deceased individual as a priest, police did not immediately confirm this identity.

Prosecutors revealed that the attacker had originally headed toward a nearby border crossing to return to Ukraine before diverting to the abbey instead. The underlying motive for the attack remains unclear, and medical professionals will evaluate whether the suspect was under the influence of alcohol, noted Harasz-Wołoszyn.

Leaders Respond

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated that the “murderer” would face punishment with the “full severity of Polish law.”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the incident, calling it a “horrific crime.” He added, “The perpetrator of this evil must bear full responsibility in accordance with the law … We are shaken by this evil. Justice must be done.”

Following the tragedy, Jaroslaw Mayor Marcin Nazarewicz declared a period of mourning to last until the end of the week.

Violent stabbings, particularly those occurring at religious sites, are exceptionally rare in Poland, which remains one of Europe’s most predominantly Catholic nations.
