Lebanon's Prime Minister Nawaf Salam announced that his nation is pursuing a "new chapter" in diplomatic relations with Iran following a meeting with President Masoud Pezeshkian at the UN on Thursday. The rare face-to-face discussions occurred in New York during the UN General Assembly, as Iran has historically exerted significant influence over Lebanese politics through its proxy, Hezbollah.

This regional dynamic drew Lebanon into the conflict in March when Hezbollah initiated hostilities in support of its allies in Tehran, prompting a severe military response from the Israeli military across Lebanon. Even prior to these events, the government of Mr Salam had been working to limit Iranian influence by disarming Hezbollah.

During their Thursday meeting, Mr Salam informed Mr Pezeshkian that Lebanon "does not want to be a battlefield for regional conflicts or an arena for exchanging messages." He emphasized that Lebanon "looks forward to opening a new chapter" with Iran centered on "building a sound state-to-state relationship based on respect for each other's sovereignty and independence."

Furthermore, Mr Salam urged Iran to appoint a new ambassador to Lebanon to resolve a diplomatic tension that arose when Mohammad Reza Sheibani was declared unwelcome following the outbreak of fighting in March. Concurrently, Lebanon has pursued support from the US to resolve the conflict with Israel, leading to a June agreement in Washington regarding Israeli troop withdrawals from disarmed areas, though implementation has encountered delays.

Meanwhile, Hezbollah maintains its refusal to surrender its weapons, asserting their necessity for national defense against Israel. While Iranian state media omitted specific details of the talks, President Pezeshkian stated during his UN General Assembly address a day earlier that regional security requires collective effort, noting that "Peace that does not encompass all is no peace.">
