Walking into a hotel in Abu Dhabi will feel distinctly more Emirati next year. A new scheme launched by the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi will place Emirati culture at the heart of the guest experience when staying in the city.
Hotels will have to comply with measures including ensuring guests receive information about the culture and heritage of the UAE, having one employee dressed in Emirati attire to greet guests upon arrival, and offering at least three Emirati dishes on the menu. The new rules are expected to come into effect during the first quarter of 2027.
Hoteliers in the emirate have welcomed the move, noting that it will enhance the tourist experience by allowing visitors to further embrace local culture. Catalina Susan, general manager of Marriott Al Forsan, Abu Dhabi, stated that pre-arrival information, traditional dishes, and staff in Emirati attire greeting visitors with 'Marhaba al-saa' will help guests experience the heritage and generosity of the UAE.
Under the new rules, hotels must apply 20 of the 65 Emirati Dhiyafa (Hospitality) Standards, with 10 being compulsory. Hotel apartments have a minimum requirement of 10 standards, five of which are mandatory. The initiative is part of the broader Abu Dhabi Tourism Strategy 2030, which aims to increase visitor numbers and boost the hospitality sector's contribution to the economy.
