George Russell delivered a masterclass at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, holding off Red Bull’s four-time world champion Max Verstappen to claim a brilliant lights-to-flag victory for Mercedes.

Russell crossed the finish line just 0.196 seconds ahead of Verstappen, who had charged from eighth on the grid to create a nail-biting finish following two safety car interruptions on the Baku street track. The triumph marks the eighth win of Russell's career, his third of the season, and his first since the Austrian Grand Prix in late June.

Frenchman Isack Hadjar secured the final spot on the podium, making a remarkable return from a wrist injury just days after signing a contract extension with Red Bull. Meanwhile, championship leader Kimi Antonelli limited the damage to his standings lead by recovering from a 16th-place start to finish fifth, just behind Ferrari's Charles Leclerc in fourth.

Mercedes teammate and seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton finished sixth, followed by Racing Bulls rookie Arvid Lindblad in seventh. Haas secured a double points finish with Esteban Ocon taking eighth and teammate Oliver Bearman in ninth, while Carlos Sainz rounded out the top 10 for Williams.

Following 15 rounds of the championship, the win allows Russell to narrow the gap in the overall standings to Italian leader Antonelli, trailing 66 points to 15. Reflecting on his victory, Russell stated, “It’s amazing to be back on the top step of the podium. Every race since the (summer) break I’ve gone from strength to strength and I feel more like myself again.”
