Egypt’s Dar al-Iftaa has affirmed that a wife’s financial status remains completely independent of her husband, granting her the full right to own and dispose of her own money and salary.

According to the clarification, a husband has no legal right to force his wife to contribute her earnings toward household expenses.

This ruling was detailed in a fatwa issued by the former Grand Mufti of Egypt, Nasr Farid Wasel, on March 4, 1997, addressing the permissibility of a working wife spending her salary on the marital home.

The fatwa emphasized that the Islamic financial system between spouses is rooted in complete financial independence, allowing a wife to own property, enter into contracts, and manage obligations autonomously.

Furthermore, Islamic Sharia strictly obligates the husband to provide fully for his wife, covering food, clothing, shelter, domestic help, and all household furnishings.

While any contribution from a wife's personal salary must be entirely voluntary and based on her free will, the fatwa encourages mutual cooperation between spouses in bearing life's burdens without coercion.
