Three individuals, including a young child, lost their lives off the coast of France while attempting a dangerous journey across the English Channel to the United Kingdom, according to statements from French authorities. France’s maritime police reported receiving a distress call from an overloaded inflatable dinghy carrying 105 people that ran into trouble in calm seas.

The incident, which authorities described as involving a "taxi boat," took place off the coast of Wissant, a seaside village located in northern France. A "taxi boat" typically refers to a dinghy that approaches the beach from the sea to pick up migrants in shallow waters near the shore. The maritime prefecture confirmed that all passengers on board requested rescue assistance and were subsequently taken into care, noting that the dinghy itself had not sunk.

According to the AFP news agency, a rescue boat arrived at the port of Calais by mid-morning to begin disembarking individuals who had been saved from the perilous incident. Official tallies from AFP, based on French and British sources, indicate that at least 29 migrants lost their lives last year while trying to cross the Channel. Furthermore, more than 41,000 people embarked on the treacherous journey across one of the world's busiest shipping lanes during the same period.

The ongoing maritime crossings have sparked intense political debate. Figures such as Nigel Farage, leader of the far-right party Reform UK, have framed the situation as a crisis, while anti-immigration activists have used the crossings as a rallying point. Successive British governments have repeatedly pledged to halt the small boat journeys amid organized anti-immigration protests that have attracted hundreds of demonstrators.

In April, the governments of France and the UK signed a formal agreement designed to strengthen joint operations and prevent crossings through a significant boost in human, technological, and intelligence resources. However, tensions remain; last month, a proposal by Reform UK to deploy the navy to intercept and return asylum seekers arriving by boat led to a diplomatic dispute with France, whose Ministry of the Interior stated that such a measure would violate international law.
