Israel’s opposition leader Yair Lapid has accused Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of engaging in "fear-mongering" after the incumbent leader warned that the country’s enemies might launch an attack ahead of the upcoming general election. Yair Lapid, who heads the Yesh Atid party, dismissed the warning following a security meeting with the prime minister on Tuesday.

Earlier that day, Benjamin Netanyahu posted an online video featuring himself in front of a fighter jet at a military base, stating there were "indications that, ahead of the elections, our enemies will try to attack us." While he did not name a specific adversary, he has recently issued warnings directed at Iran, Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Palestinian Authority.

Following an urgent security briefing requested by Yair Lapid, the opposition leader stated online that the election would proceed on schedule and insisted there was "no reason to panic the public." He criticized Benjamin Netanyahu for utilizing military bases as campaign props and recalled past security failures leading up to the Hamas-led attacks of October 7, 2023, which initiated the war on Gaza.

The general election, set for October 7, represents Israel's first national vote since the outbreak of the conflict that affected Gaza, Lebanon, and Iran. Polls indicate a tightly contested race, with Gadi Eisenkot's party leading Benjamin Netanyahu's Likud party by two points in a Reuters polling average, while opposition figures coordinate efforts to challenge the current government.
