Rory McIlroy has given a significant boost to the DP World Tour by confirming that he will travel to the UAE to compete in the Abu Dhabi Championship. The tournament serves as the penultimate event of the tour season, with the Race to Dubai winner to be decided the following week in Dubai.

Mcilroy is currently vying with Patrick Reed at the top of the standings. Approximately 300 points separate the familiar rivals, and the race winner will ultimately be decided in the UAE.

While some players have voiced doubts about taking part in the two-week play-off series in the Emirates due to the Iran conflict—such as Matt Fitzpatrick, who stated he was not entirely comfortable given the regional situation—top professional golf has officially resumed in the country via the HotelPlanner Tour’s Abu Dhabi Challenge.

McIlroy has now given a further endorsement by confirming his participation in the capital. The tournament will also feature a new sponsor, with Aldar replacing HSBC as the title sponsor.

Reflecting on the event, McIlroy expressed his enthusiasm, noting that Abu Dhabi is a fantastic place to visit and that Yas Links is always in immaculate condition. Having finished runner-up four times, he hopes to go one better and secure another Race to Dubai title.

The tournament will take place at Yas Links from November 5 to 8, featuring the leading 70 available players on the Race to Dubai rankings, before the field is cut to 50 for the DP World Tour Championship at Jumeirah Golf Estates.

DP World Tour chief executive Guy Kinnings welcomed the confirmation, highlighting that McIlroy's chase for a record-equalling eighth Race to Dubai title will add further drama to the play-offs. Last year's title was won by England's Aaron Rai after defeating Tommy Fleetwood in a play-off.
