Writing as South Africa’s Ambassador to Qatar, Ghulam Hoosein Asmal reflects on the University of Johannesburg’s decision to confer an Honorary Doctorate upon Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, recognizing her enduring contributions to education, social development, justice, and human dignity.

This prestigious recognition extends beyond a personal accolade, serving as a tribute to a lifetime dedicated to empowering communities, advancing education, and championing social justice. For South Africa, the honor carries deep significance, aligning with the democratic values of equality, reconciliation, and human solidarity.

The celebration coincides with a period of mourning following the passing of her beloved husband, His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, the visionary statesman, Father Amir, and architect of modern Qatar. Condolences were extended on behalf of the Government and people of South Africa to the Al Thani family and the people of Qatar, honoring his remarkable legacy of nation-building and global engagement.

For over two decades, Her Highness Sheikha Moza has been a leading advocate for human development globally. Through initiatives like the Qatar Foundation, she has transformed education and social development, expanding access to quality learning, strengthening healthcare, and championing sustainable development.

A central pillar of her advocacy has been the empowerment of women and girls, demonstrating that investing in women is both a moral imperative and an economic necessity that inspires future generations across the Global South. Furthermore, her steadfast commitment to peace, dialogue, and justice—including her advocacy for the Palestinian people—reflects a dedication to human dignity and coexistence.

Concluding the tribute, the honorary doctorate is celebrated as a symbol of compassionate leadership and bridge-building across cultures, uniting South Africa, Qatar, and the international community in the pursuit of a more just and humane world.
