A massive oil spill from a leaking tanker has successfully reached Oman's coastline, threatening to become one of the worst environmental disasters in recent years after spreading largely unchecked for weeks. According to analysis by the country's environment agency, the slick now covers an area of more than 2,000 square kilometres (770 square miles).
The Environment Authority of Oman stated that approximately 40 kilometres (25 miles) of coast near Ras Madraka, along with Masirah Island, could be affected by the pollution. The oil has been leaking from the tanker Caroline Bezengi after it ran aground roughly 22 nautical miles (41 kilometres) from Sharbithat, following a suspected explosion on June 8 while en route from Russia to India.
Reuters reported that the vessel was carrying an estimated 800,000 barrels of sanctioned oil. Open-source database OpenSanctions lists Rentoor Shipmanagement and Villar Shipmanagement as the ship's owner and operator, respectively. The vessel previously sailed from the Russian port of Novorossiysk and is believed to be part of Russia's shadow fleet.
Environmental advocacy groups, including Greenpeace, have warned of an impending environmental disaster. Experts like Christopher D'Elia noted that illegal tankers often fail to comply with international regulations, leaving no clear responsible party to finance the cleanup.
Meanwhile, Iranian media reported a separate oil spill in the Strait of Hormuz reaching the island of Qeshm, affecting beaches and a local mangrove forest, with Iran's Ministry of Foreign Affairs pointing to a foreign bulk carrier as the source.
