South Korea’s exports experienced an unprecedented surge to a monthly record, fueled by explosive global demand for semiconductor chips essential for artificial intelligence applications. According to preliminary customs figures released on Thursday, exports skyrocketed 83.5 percent year-on-year to reach $120.9bn in September, surpassing the previous monthly record of $102.25bn established in June.

Data from the Korea Customs Service revealed that chip shipments comprised nearly half of all outbound shipments, shooting up by more than 260 percent to $60.3bn. Cumulative total exports from January through September climbed to $814.5bn, already outperforming the figures for the entirety of 2025, which had previously set a record at $709.7bn. During the first nine months of the year, South Korea accumulated a trade surplus of $49.85bn.

Kim Jeong-kwan, South Korea’s minister for trade and industry, highlighted the milestone in an official statement, praising the dedication of local entrepreneurs competing globally. However, Kim also noted that potential hurdles remain, citing the intensification of global protectionism and ongoing tensions in the Middle East as major variables for future trade.

As Asia’s fourth-largest economy, South Korea hosts a dominant semiconductor sector anchored by industry giants SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics. Research from Counterpoint Research indicates that SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics collectively command approximately 80 percent of the worldwide market for high-bandwidth memory and 60 percent of the market for dynamic random-access memory. Driven by this dominance and a worldwide shortage of AI memory chips, South Korea’s nominal gross domestic product (GDP) growth surged to a five-decade high in the April-June quarter, leaping 26.4 percent year-on-year.

Looking ahead, the South Korean Ministry of Finance and Economy projects real GDP growth of 3 percent for 2026, marking the country's strongest economic performance since 2017, excluding pandemic-era fluctuations. Furthermore, the massive artificial intelligence rally has driven the benchmark Kospi stock market index up by nearly 60 percent, positioning the nation's bourse among the top global performers this year.
