The Lebanese army announced on Thursday the seizure of nearly 250kg of explosives smuggled across the border from Syria. Alongside the substantial stash of highly explosive TNT, authorities recovered four bombs, eight detonators, and electrical wires.
According to the military, the smugglers fled back into Syria as an army patrol approached the scene in Lebanon's north-eastern border region. While investigators have not yet identified the suspects or their intended targets, officials stated that follow-up operations and coordination are ongoing to apprehend those involved.
Border smuggling, particularly involving the Lebanese group Hezbollah, has remained a primary security focus for the Syrian government following leadership changes in 2024. Although Hezbollah was a known ally of the former regime of Bashar Al Assad, the army did not comment on any potential involvement in Thursday's seizure.
The incident unfolded just a day after Syrian security forces arrested three individuals belonging to an alleged Hezbollah cell and dismantled their rocket launchers. Amid rising regional tensions, Reuters reported that Syria and Hezbollah held an undisclosed meeting in Turkey to de-escalate the situation, though both Turkish and Syrian officials formally denied that the gathering took place.
Despite historical friction—including Syria's occupation of Lebanon until 2005—Lebanon and Syria have actively worked to build security cooperation following political transitions in 2024 and 2025. This collaboration recently led to a joint security operation uncovering a cell accused of plotting attacks inside Syria.
