South Korea’s military reported that North Korea has launched at least one ballistic missile toward the sea off its east coast. According to South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff, the launch took place on Saturday morning from the port city of Wonsan on the eastern shore of the Korean Peninsula, prompting the South Korean military to raise its alert status for any potential subsequent launches.
Japan also issued an emergency warning on Saturday, stating that North Korea had launched a suspected ballistic missile. This military action occurred just a day after Kim Yo Jong, the influential sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, dismissed South Korean demands for an apology regarding landmine explosions. South Korea and the US-led United Nations Command attributed the blasts to North Korean mines placed south of the Military Demarcation Line, which resulted in severe injuries to three South Korean soldiers conducting a reconnaissance mission within the 4km-wide (2.5-mile) border zone.
Additionally, Seoul had urged Pyongyang to cease ongoing efforts to reinforce the border through the deployment of mines and anti-tank barriers. However, Kim Yo Jong characterized these demands as completely pathetic and asserted that the North plans to sever relations with the South indefinitely.
Saturday's missile launch represents the most recent event in an escalating sequence of North Korean military demonstrations over the past few weeks, which have featured tests involving a claimed hypersonic missile system, live-fire drills, and the introduction of a new warship into service.
