A US Marine stationed in Japan was taken into custody on Sunday following the discovery of a woman's body in a hotel room in Naha city on Okinawa island, according to local police.

Authorities reported that the 39-year-old victim was found unresponsive early Saturday and pronounced dead at the scene. Based on the condition of the body, investigators stated she appeared to have been murdered, though further details were withheld pending ongoing inquiries.

The suspect, a 20-year-old service member stationed at Futenma Air Station, was apprehended less than 24 hours after the discovery while walking through the city. Closed-circuit television footage reviewed by police allegedly captured a foreign national with a shaved head entering the room with the victim and later departing with her belongings.

The US embassy in Tokyo released a statement on X acknowledging the custody of the service member following the incident. "As an investigation is underway to determine the facts of the case, the United States is communicating and cooperating with the Government of Japan and local authorities," the embassy noted.

Both the Pentagon and the US Marine Corps have been contacted by CNN for comment as the local police investigation continues.
