Two Iranian nationals have appeared before an English court facing charges regarding an alleged conspiracy to utilize a home-made explosive device in an attack against Jewish individuals located in Manchester.
Rahman Salehi, 34, and Salam Ahmadyan, 36, face accusations of planning terrorist acts under the direction of an individual suspected to be located in Iran. According to prosecutors, the defendants conducted hostile surveillance operations targeting potential Jewish sites in Manchester.
Prosecutor Mark Luckett informed Westminster Magistrates' Court that the designated targets featured the Manchester Jewish Museum and Heaton Park synagogue, which was the location of a fatal incident a year prior that resulted in the deaths of two Jewish worshippers. Mr. Luckett stated that both defendants stand accused of preparing acts of terrorism directed at the Manchester Jewish community via a home-made explosive device.
Law enforcement arrested the pair last month at the commencement of Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the Jewish calendar. Following their appearance in a London court, they were remanded in custody until their upcoming hearing on October 23, having entered no plea.
The court heard that a third suspect is believed to have orchestrated the attack planning and supplied instructions for assembling a home-made device, which prosecutors assert would have been constructed utilizing chlorine and brake fluid. Mr. Luckett noted that authorities assess this individual to also be an Iranian national, most likely operating from within Iran.
Furthermore, the court was informed that both suspects entered Britain from Europe utilizing small boats. Mr. Salehi arrived in 2020 and received asylum, whereas Mr. Ahmadyan arrived in 2023 with an asylum claim that remains outstanding, according to Mr. Luckett.
This legal proceeding unfolds days after Britain stated that Iran is believed to have involvement in a separate suspected plot targeting the RAF Fairford airbase, a facility utilized by the US military for carrying out raids against targets in Iran. A British-Iranian national was arrested under suspicion of preparing terrorist acts in connection with that situation, and police confirmed on Saturday that this individual has been released on police bail while the investigation proceeds.
British counter-terrorism police stated that the allegations in Manchester are unconnected to the RAF Fairford investigation. Meanwhile, Iran has dismissed accusations regarding involvement in various plots within Britain over recent years, asserting that allegations linking it to the Fairford incident are baseless.
