The United States has relocated its long-range bombers back to domestic American bases following an unspecified new threat, according to a US official. This decision comes just days after the British government arrested several individuals in connection with an alleged Iranian plot targeting the UK airbase where the aircraft had been stationed.
“We can acknowledge now that all U.S. bombers that were deployed to RAF Fairford have re-deployed to their home stations in the United States,” the official told CNN, withholding further details on the sudden movement. A source familiar with the matter described the situation as a “real world incident.” Defense analysts noted that returning the aircraft directly to the United States rather than another regional base is an unusual measure.
The UK Ministry of Defense declined to comment on the redeployment. RAF Fairford has historically hosted US B-1 bombers participating in operations against Iran and serves as a key operating location for US Global Strike Command.
CNN national security analyst Alex Plitsas stated that several dozen bombers were likely stationed at Fairford, emphasizing the unusual nature of a complete withdrawal. “It speaks to the credibility and the seriousness of the threat overall to the base that we’re talking about,” he told Ben Hunte on CNN Newsroom.
The relocation follows an ongoing investigation into the alleged plot. British police previously arrested five men near the airbase on suspicion of terror and explosives offenses, though they were later released on bail after no explosives were discovered. The quick release drew criticism from President Donald Trump. An additional 25-year-old British-Iranian dual national was subsequently arrested in connection with the investigation.
British Prime Minister Andy Burnham stated there are “strong indications” of Iranian involvement. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio similarly pointed to foreign actors, noting Iran's history of threatening American interests globally. Meanwhile, Iran has strongly denied any involvement, dismissed the allegations as baseless, and summoned the British ambassador in Tehran in response.
