The Polish embassy in Washington on Monday expressed strong outrage over media personality Tucker Carlson and his recent comments concerning Poland, Adolf Hitler, and the Second World War. Bogdan Klich, serving as the charge d'affaires for the embassy, labeled the remarks made by Carlson over the weekend as "false" and "deeply troubling," while formally demanding a retraction.
"As an American journalist who enjoys the democratic right to the freedom of speech, you have now become an apologist for Adolf Hitler," Mr Klich stated regarding the interview conducted with a British politician. "In doing so, you resort to lies, completely falsifying the documented historical record."
In an official statement published on X, Mr Klich noted that Carlson had seemingly justified Nazi Germany's 1939 invasion of Poland—an event that subsequently prompted France and the UK to declare war on the Third Reich—by characterizing the region as containing "German territory with Germans in it."
"This statement constitutes a colossal insult to the millions of victims of Nazism, including hundreds of thousands of American soldiers who had been killed or wounded while liberating Europe from the occupation of the Third Reich," added Mr Klich.
The controversy stemmed from an interview with Jacob Rees-Mogg released over the weekend, during which Carlson questioned why the UK had participated in the Second World War, suggesting that Hitler had no quarrel with England.
When Mr Rees-Mogg replied, "Otherwise, we’d be speaking German," Carlson responded by saying, "Who cares? There are a lot of people in Britain who can’t speak English. So it would be nice to have at least a European language spoken in your country." Even Mr Rees-Mogg observed that Carlson appeared on the verge of defending Hitler.
Throughout his career, Carlson has previously expressed support for Russian President Vladimir Putin. Notably, President Putin's stated justification for invading Ukraine in 2022 was to assist Russian-speaking populations in the eastern region of the country, drawing parallels to arguments often criticized as echoing Russian talking points and blaming the West and Nato.
