Cristiano Ronaldo, Portugal's leading scorer, has accused Portugal coach Jorge Jesus of twice breaking his word. According to the 41-year-old forward, a failed agreement to publicly explain his omission against Norway drove him out of the camp, though he insists he remains available for selection after facing any disciplinary punishment.
In a detailed statement, Ronaldo shared his perspective on the dispute that led to his departure from Copenhagen prior to Portugal’s UEFA Nations League match against Denmark. Ronaldo stated that Jesus had originally agreed to a plan where the forward would miss the Norway and Denmark matches to properly manage his fitness levels. However, on the day of the Norway fixture, the coach informed him he would instead play for 30 minutes.
“Everyone knows the rest. I warmed up from halftime onwards, watched the minutes tick by and wasn’t called on,” Ronaldo said. “The manager had broken his word to me.”
The Portugal captain and all-time leading scorer explained that a subsequent meeting with Jesus—which was also attended by his club side Al Nassr’s sporting director Simao Coutinho—resulted in an agreement for the coach to clarify the events during his next press conference. An eight-point document was reportedly prepared, stating that Ronaldo had never demanded playing time, had fully respected Jesus’s decisions, and that calling him to warm up without substituting him on was a mistake. While the notes did not require Jesus to issue a direct apology, Ronaldo noted that the coach's later public remarks completely contradicted their private discussion.
“It was the second time he had broken his word to me,” Ronaldo stated. “I decided to leave the training camp without waiting for any further broken promises.”
Following Portugal's victory over Norway, Jesus denied that any such agreement had ever been made with the player, while still leaving the door open for a potential return. Meanwhile, the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding Ronaldo's public statement.
Ronaldo formally apologized for failing to acknowledge supporters after the Norway match and for leaving his teammates prematurely, acknowledging that his role as captain makes his actions subject to greater scrutiny. “The consequences of my actions must be assessed and punished by the Portuguese Football Federation,” he said.
Despite the current rupture, Ronaldo confirmed that his international career is not finished. “If I’m physically fit, playing for my club – scoring goals, I hope – after serving whatever suspension is imposed on me, I’ll be available, as I’ve always been until now, to compete and win for our national team,” he concluded.
