The mayor of an affluent Israeli city has strongly condemned a senior government official for handing out pins featuring a hangman’s noose, as legislative efforts to broaden the application of the death penalty against Palestinians continue to advance in Israel.
National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir distributed the controversial pins to students during a Monday visit to Handasaim Herzliya High School, as reported by The Jerusalem Post. Yariv Fisher, the mayor of Herzliya, characterized the episode as an “ugly incident […] representing the crossing of an educational, ethical and moral red line.”
“There are things that simply cannot happen within school walls, where many students are under the age of 18,” Mayor Yariv Fisher added. According to the report, school officials had previously informed representatives of Mr Ben-Gvir that distributing the pins was prohibited and instructed staff members to confiscate them once they were handed out.
The event occurred amidst the ongoing election campaign of Mr Ben-Gvir, who has actively promoted his far-right platform through videos featuring the mistreatment of Palestinian detainees and the celebration of demolished Palestinian homes. While Israel has historically applied the death penalty on only two occasions, Mr Ben-Gvir has aggressively campaigned for its use against Palestinians convicted of lethal attacks.
Defending the actions, a statement from Mr Ben-Gvir’s party, Otzma Yehudit, asserted, “Otzma Yehudit is proud to demonstrate to the young generation in schools the importance of deterrence against terrorism, without fear and without blinking. A terrorist who comes to kill a Jew must die, period.”
Earlier in August, Mr Ben-Gvir announced proposals to construct an execution facility within a newly established death row wing at a prison situated in central Israel.
