Saudi authorities have suspended four companies offering Umrah pilgrimages to Makkah after visitors were provided with unlicensed housing. The Saudi Arabia Ministry of Hajj and Umrah announced that the companies, alongside four agents, faced disciplinary action for violations that directly affected a number of pilgrims.

According to the ministry, the breaches involved housing pilgrims in facilities lacking proper licensing. Consequently, the responsible companies have been referred to a Committee for Reviewing Pilgrims' Complaints, which holds the authority to issue further penalties.

The ministry issued a strong warning to all providers of Umrah services, emphasizing that operations remain subject to strict field and digital monitoring to ensure compliance with all official requirements. This regulatory oversight aligns with the Pilgrim Experience Programme, designed to elevate services for religious visitors as part of Saudi Arabia's broader economic modernisation plan to establish the nation as a global tourism hub.

Unlike Hajj, which is bound to a specific window in the Islamic calendar, Umrah is a pilgrimage to Makkah that can be undertaken at any time of year. Although not mandatory like Hajj, Umrah holds profound spiritual significance for Muslims globally.

To facilitate travel, the ministry introduced a new Umrah visa this year, permitting pilgrims to enter Saudi Arabia multiple times within a single year for a maximum cumulative stay of 90 days. While Hajj packages typically bundle accommodation and transport into comprehensive arrangements, Umrah travellers generally enjoy greater flexibility to book hotels independently. The current Umrah season is scheduled to run until April 7, approximately five weeks prior to the expected commencement of Hajj in May 2027.
