With less than a month remaining before the United States approaches pivotal midterms, a recent Gallup survey reveals that the majority of independent voters and supporters of President Donald Trump do not believe the upcoming elections will be conducted honestly.

Released on Wednesday, the polling data shows that only 37 percent of Republicans and 35 percent of independents hold confidence in the nation's electoral system, figures that stand significantly lower than the 63 percent reported among US Democrats. Overall, 49 percent of Americans expressed confidence in election honesty, while 51 percent remained skeptical—figures that mirror the metrics recorded during the previous midterm election in 2022.

Gallup noted in a statement that these findings mark a distinct shift from 2025, which was the first year of President Donald Trump's second term. During that period, confidence was nominally higher among government approvers at 51 percent compared to disapprovers at 45 percent. The current data underscores a profound, historic partisan divide regarding trust in the US electoral process.

"Since 2025 and President Donald Trump's return to the White House, the relationship between leadership approval and confidence in elections has disappeared," Gallup stated.

Furthermore, Gallup highlighted that the United States stands alone among more than 100 countries polled annually over the past 15 years in displaying this specific pattern. Trust in US election integrity is currently higher among individuals who disapprove of the national leadership under President Donald Trump at 52 percent, compared to just 41 percent among those who approve.

Globally, across more than 100 countries monitored by the polling organization, citizens who approve of their respective governments typically exhibit higher trust in national elections. In 2025, 70 percent of people worldwide who approved of their national leadership expressed confidence in election honesty, contrasted with 30 percent among those who disapproved.

"The current US pattern is highly unusual compared with the rest of the world," Gallup emphasized. By comparison, under former US President Joe Biden, 81 percent of Americans who approved of the government expressed confidence in elections, while only 30 percent of disapprovers shared that view.

Gallup cautioned that this unusual divide could carry significant implications for the November elections, raising ongoing questions about whether all voters will ultimately accept the results as legitimate. The White House declined to respond to a request for comment regarding the survey findings.
