Attacks on British mosques are becoming more severe, even as reports of lower-level intimidation targeting Muslims have decreased, according to a recent report. The British Muslim Trust reported 78 attacks and incidents against mosques across the UK and Channel Islands in the year ending in July 2026, averaging one incident every five days.

While lower-level threats—such as graffiti, property damage, and the desecration of items left outside buildings—saw a reduction, more severe incidents involving arson, weapons, death threats, and violence increased. These included foiled mass casualty plots, which were absent the previous year. The assessment also factored in sustained harassment and online campaigns.

The incidents impacted 64 mosques and associated buildings, with nearly one-fifth of those locations targeted multiple times within the year. Akeela Ahmed, chief executive of the British Muslim Trust, stated that unchecked minor incidents ultimately paved the way for more serious crimes, leaving British Muslims feeling increasingly vulnerable and fearful in their daily lives.

In response, the Home Office has allocated £40 million ($52.8 million) to protect mosques and Muslim community organisations. However, the British Muslim Trust previously highlighted delays of up to 18 months in accessing these funds and continues to advocate for addressing the root causes of anti-Muslim hate.

The report noted heightened attacks during Ramadan, highlighting specific incidents such as property damage in Ayr, Scotland, terrorism-related charges following a stabbing outside a mosque in Edinburgh, an arson attack in Peacehaven, East Sussex, and twelve arrests linked to a foiled terror plot targeting an Islamic event in Ipswich in July, as reported by Counter Terrorism Policing London.
