Turkish firefighters and rescuers of the Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD) have been working tirelessly among the rubble following the partial collapse of a building in the Maltepe district of Istanbul on October 8, 2026. Officials confirmed that at least two people lost their lives in the disaster.
Emergency crews launched operations to reach individuals believed to be trapped beneath the debris, while authorities initiated an investigation to determine the cause of the incident. The tragedy struck before dawn on the Asian side of the city, causing the building's three lower floors—including a ground-floor shop—to cave in.
According to the Istanbul governor’s office, residents from the upper floors were safely evacuated, and search teams successfully rescued eight people from the rubble alongside recovering the two bodies. Istanbul Governor Davut Gul noted that rescue teams had previously made contact with a 6-year-old trapped in the rubble, though it remained unclear if the child was among the rescued. Ongoing risks of further collapse have complicated rescue operations, prompting the evacuation of nearby buildings as a safety precaution. The city continues to navigate an urban transformation programme designed to replace older, earthquake-prone structures with safer housing.
