Canadian poet and writer Anne Carson has officially been awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature, according to an announcement by the award-giving body. The Swedish Academy selected Carson for her daring and innovative body of work, which engages in a playful dialogue with the classical tradition to forge new forms for contemporary literature.

The 76-year-old author, who is also a professor of classics, is widely celebrated for blurring the boundaries between poetry and fiction while offering fresh translations of ancient works. Having authored more than 20 books—some of which have transitioned into theatrical plays—Carson has earned numerous literary accolades throughout her career.

“Almost all her literary production has centred upon the intersection between the philologist’s obsession with words and the poet’s desire for new meaning,” stated the academy, noting that Carson identifies the etymology of words as the foundation of her creative process.

Ingrid Carlberg, permanent secretary of the academy awarding the 12 million Swedish crowns ($1.2m) prize, shared that Carson was completely taken by surprise. Speaking to Icelandic broadcaster RUV shortly after the news broke, Carson remarked from Iceland, where she currently holds citizenship, "Crazy. I think they’re all crazy … Well, you know, it’s crazy."

Among her prominent literary creations are The Beauty of the Husband, a poignant narrative poem about a failing marriage, and The Trojan Women, a 2021 graphic retelling of Euripides's classic tale infused with modern vernacular. In August 2024, Carson shared in the London Review of Books that she is living with Parkinson’s disease.

As the fourth Nobel prize announced this week—following medicine, physics, and chemistry—the literature prize remains one of the world's most prestigious international honors, established by Alfred Nobel.
