Six-time French champions Bordeaux, previously sanctioned in the summer due to financial irregularities, are set to compete in the sixth tier of French football this season, as confirmed by the Nouvelle-Aquitaine league on Thursday. The sanctions came after the club failed to secure roughly 10 million euros ($11.6m) required for the 2025-26 and 2026-27 financial years, alongside failing to meet ongoing debt obligations.

Once standing as one of France’s premier football clubs and famously serving as the club where the country’s new head coach, Zinedine Zidane, made his name, Bordeaux was sold last month for a symbolic one euro to US-based investment group Park Bench, which assumed the remaining debt. Following an appearance before the Nouvelle-Aquitaine league oversight commission—which approved its recovery budget and delivered a positive opinion on participating in Regional 1—the club received unanimous approval to enter the top regional tier.

"Rebuilding can now begin," stated Dominique Delport, the newly appointed president chosen by Park Bench, during an interview with the AFP news agency.

The new owners are scheduled to appear in commercial court on October 20 to ratify a continuation plan now extended over 12 years, which successfully halves the debt from 26 million to 13 million euros. While the squad operates largely as an amateur team, the club retains the right to field five players on professional contracts, including former Ligue 1 striker Baptiste Guillaume.

Historically, the club has served as a nursery for numerous French football icons, including academy products Bixente Lizarazu and Christophe Dugarry. Both players famously featured alongside Zidane on the 1998 World Cup-winning squad. Over a decade prior, Alain Giresse and Jean Tigana formed part of the celebrated France midfield that clinched the 1984 European Championship.

Despite this storied legacy, the team suffered relegation to Ligue 2 in 2022 and faced judicial restructuring in 2024, ultimately forcing the club to relinquish both its professional status and its highly rated academy.
