Members of the Mexican army stand guard outside El Castillo prison following reports of a riot at the facility in Mazatlan, Mexico, on October 8, 2026. A violent clash at the El Castillo Penitentiary Centre in the city of Mazatlan has resulted in 10 deaths and 16 injuries, according to statements from state authorities.
The Sinaloa Public Security Secretariat reported on Thursday that the altercation inside the facility claimed the lives of nine inmates and one family visitor. In a video shared on social media, Sinaloa’s Secretary of Public Security, Sinuhe Tellez, confirmed that the deceased visitor was a minor.
The 16 injured inmates were promptly transferred for medical attention, as confirmed by the secretariat. Security forces from an inter-institutional group intervened, and authorities announced that the prison is now "under control" while security personnel maintain their presence at the site.
Social work staff are currently reaching out to the families of the victims, Tellez stated. As a precautionary measure, prison visits have been suspended, and the remaining prison population is reported to be safe.
The region of Sinaloa serves as a battleground for warring factions of the Sinaloa drug cartel and remains one of six Mexican states where the US State Department advises citizens against traveling due to security concerns. Officials have not yet clarified whether the prison violence is connected to this broader cartel conflict.
