Russian forces continue to retreat in Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk region. The Kremlin-aligned channel Rybar, on Telegram, reported that Moscow’s forces were losing villages south of Lyman, a town they had previously targeted as a springboard for an offensive on Sloviansk and Kramatorsk. A Ukrainian counteroffensive designated as “Operation Vivaldi” has successfully reclaimed 175 square kilometres of occupied land around Lyman.
British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha recently visited a makeshift memorial at an apartment building in Pryluky, Chernihiv region, where 22 residents were killed by a Russian missile strike. According to Rybar, premature Russian claims regarding the capture of certain settlements inadvertently aided Ukrainian forces by allowing them to accumulate troops and launch effective counterattacks.
As Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence reported striking a record number of air defence assets and distant targets in September, Russian President Vladimir Putin claimed territorial gains that were contradicted by the Institute for the Study of War. Meanwhile, Russian casualty rates reportedly reached record highs, prompting an escalation in aerial bombardments targeting civilian areas, energy facilities, and bridges across the Dnipro River.
In response to incoming jet-powered drones such as the Geran-4 and Geran-5, Ukraine has accelerated the deployment of F-16 fighters, interceptor drones, and AI-driven machine-gun turrets. Concurrently, international backing continues, highlighted by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s visit to Kyiv to announce a substantial military aid package. Ukraine has also pressed forward with long-range strikes targeting Russian oil refineries, fuel hubs, and military airfields to severely disrupt Moscow's military logistics and economy.
