Intercommunal clashes have resulted in the deaths of 71 people in the town of Rumbek, located in South Sudan’s Lakes State, according to a statement from the caretaker government.

The South Sudanese interim Ministry of Information announced in a Friday statement that initial security reports indicate approximately 71 people were killed, including four soldiers, though the exact fatality count still needs verification.

Witnesses reported to AFP that an outside group attempted to take control of Rumbek and succeeded briefly before withdrawing upon the arrival of police and military reinforcements. Two witnesses noted that the fighting subsequently shifted outside the city limits.

The government statement confirmed that Rumbek town is currently secure under the control of government security forces, with ongoing efforts to restore normalcy. The caretaker government strongly condemned the violence, urging all communities to exercise maximum restraint and avoid retaliatory actions that could heighten tensions.

This violence unfolds as South Sudan's President Salva Kiir dissolved the transitional government on September 22, just three months ahead of the nation's inaugural election since gaining independence in 2011. President Salva Kiir established a caretaker administration to oversee preparations for these first-ever national elections, ending a power-sharing framework established by a 2018 peace deal that concluded a five-year civil war responsible for approximately 400,000 deaths.

Persistent intercommunal conflict continues to plague South Sudan, generating numerous deadly encounters. Recently, on September 17, days of fighting in a disputed border region between South Sudan and Sudan left 26 people dead and 82 injured. Earlier in March, intercommunal violence claimed at least 169 lives following an attack by dozens of armed men on a town.
