Red Bull driver Max Verstappen enjoyed a stellar Saturday in Singapore, securing a dramatic sprint race victory before capturing pole position for Sunday's Grand Prix. Despite a challenging campaign, the four-time world champion is now well-positioned for back-to-back race victories following his recent triumph at the Bahrain Grand Prix, hosted in Malaysia last weekend, which followed a streak of three consecutive podium finishes.
For Sunday's main event, Verstappen will share the front row with Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, while Lewis Hamilton qualified third-fastest. Championship leader Kimi Antonelli managed only the fourth-fastest time for Mercedes. This achievement marks Verstappen's first pole position at the Marina Bay Street Circuit and comes ahead of his milestone 250th F1 race start.
Earlier on Saturday, the 29-year-old Dutchman demonstrated impressive speed by winning a chaotic sprint race held under challenging, wet conditions. Mercedes driver Russell initially led the race after a rain delay, but he slid wide at the final corner of the opening lap and crashed into the wall. Hamilton capitalized on a brilliant start from sixth on the grid to claim second place, while Leclerc finished third for Ferrari.
A late collision between the McLarens—triggered when Lando Norris attempted an overtake on Oscar Piastri—promoted Antonelli to fourth. Russell's retirement, combined with the final standings, extended the Italian driver's championship lead to 89 points. With the Marina Bay circuit proving notoriously difficult for overtaking, the inaugural sprint saw a record nine retirements due to various collisions and tricky weather.
“I think we shouldn't host a sprint where you can't pass,” Verstappen told reporters after celebrating his maiden victory at the venue. “I'm fine, I just do my thing … but it's not what I like. The overtake mode, it barely does anything here. You don't really gain a lot on the straights … we need to have a longer straight or like more of a proper hairpin to overtake.”
