Dubai has officially launched a four-week trial of an innovative public transport system featuring artificial intelligence-powered vehicles on Bluewaters island. Mattar Al Tayer, director general of the Roads and Transport Authority, took the inaugural ride along the designated route at the Dubai Holding retail destination on Saturday.
The Glydways autonomous transit system utilizes driverless electric pods that travel on dedicated ground-level or elevated roads. Each vehicle is designed to carry between four and six passengers at speeds reaching up to 50kph, boasting a range of up to 250km on a single charge. Equipped with 20 high-resolution Lidar sensors, advanced radar, and high-definition cameras, the pods can be virtually linked in groups of up to 10 with headways of less than one second, allowing the system to achieve a combined capacity exceeding 20,000 passengers per hour in both directions.
Mr Al Tayer emphasized that the trial highlights the RTA's dedication to evaluating advanced technologies within Dubai's urban landscape, specifically targeting first and last-mile connectivity. He noted that the trial period is critical for assessing technical and operational aspects, ensuring safety, and exploring integration opportunities with the broader public transport network.
Future project plans envision a 2.8km route connecting National Paints Metro Station with Bluewaters, alongside potential routes servicing Jumeirah Village Circle, Dubai Festival City, Business Bay, and Mohammed Bin Rashid City.
According to the system's developers, capital costs are up to 90 per cent lower and operating costs up to 70 per cent lower than comparable transport modes. The initiative is executed through a public-private partnership, with the Bluewaters trial developed in cooperation with Dubai Holding, which supplies the necessary infrastructure and operational support.
Mark Seeger, founder and co-chief executive of Glydways, praised Dubai as an advanced testing ground for future mobility solutions, expressing enthusiasm for using the trial results to enhance performance and support the emirate's smart and sustainable transport goals. The trial will continuously evaluate vehicle performance, safety, reliability, and passenger experience to guide decisions on future network expansions.
