Pope Leo XIV announced to pilgrims in St Peter's Square that he will undergo surgery in the coming days to remove a small lung nodule discovered during a recent health check. Speaking in Italian during his weekly Sunday blessing, the 71-year-old leader of the Roman Catholic Church stated that the condition was detected at a very early stage and is circumscribed. Following medical advice, he decided to proceed with the operation.

The Vatican indicated that a week of recovery is anticipated following the procedure, though spokespeople did not clarify whether the lesion is malignant. Medical experts note that lung nodules are localized lesions that are frequently benign, with the American Thoracic Society reporting that fewer than five percent ultimately become cancerous, despite risks increasing with age, size, and smoking history. Stephen Liu, a lung cancer expert at Georgetown University and division chief of hematology-oncology at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, confirmed that such nodules are common and often non-cancerous.

Pope Leo XIV maintains a generally active lifestyle with no previously known health issues, regularly playing tennis and swimming at the papal summer retreat in Castel Gandolfo. Despite a major Latin American tour scheduled for November 6-17 covering Uruguay, Argentina, and Peru, the pope stated his intention to proceed with the trip, though the impact of the surgery and recovery on the itinerary remains to be seen.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni extended well wishes on behalf of the Italian government, praising the pope's serenity and composure when sharing the news. The previous pontiff, the late Pope Francis, experienced multiple hospitalizations and frailty in his later years before passing away at age 88.
