North Korea has launched multiple ballistic missiles toward the sea off its east coast, according to announcements from South Korea’s military. South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) reported that at least one of the missiles traveled over 900km (559 miles) originating from the Pyongyang area on Monday, though the exact number of missiles detected was not specified.

Meanwhile, Japan’s coastguard stated that two unidentified projectiles, believed to be ballistic missiles, had been fired and appeared to have already fallen. In response, South Korea’s presidential office condemned the launches as a clear violation of United Nations Security Council resolutions and called for an immediate halt to such actions.

This latest escalation follows a period of heightened friction on the Korean Peninsula marked by a series of reciprocal weapons tests. JCS spokesperson Jang Do-young noted that the launch is perceived as a direct show of force following South Korea’s recent hypersonic missile test-fire overseen by South Korean President Lee Jae Myung. Tensions have been further strained by a recent landmine blast in the Demilitarized Zone and stalled diplomatic efforts involving North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, the United States, and South Korea.
