Qatar's Amir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, has affirmed the nation's commitment to defending its sovereignty while simultaneously pursuing diplomatic solutions to regional conflicts. Speaking at the opening of the 55th Shura Council's second session in Doha, the Amir addressed the impact of recent Iranian attacks and the broader regional war on Qatar. He commended the armed forces and security institutions for their robust response to the Iranian attacks, which he characterized as a clear violation of Qatar's sovereignty, attributing the nation's resilience to years of diligent preparation.
"Despite the ongoing war, it is our duty to remind ourselves that the LNG would not have been possible and our security would not have been possible without God and our military forces that worked around the clock to protect our land, sea and sky and they showed the utmost levels of preparedness," stated Sheikh Tamim. He reiterated Qatar's dedication to mediation, emphasizing that this pursuit would not compromise its self-defense capabilities. "Our commitment to dialogue and peaceful solutions does not mean being complacent about defending our country. Likewise, our right to defend our sovereignty does not conflict with our determination to prevent a wider war," he asserted, underscoring Doha's consistent preference for diplomatic channels over military action.
Sheikh Tamim also expressed gratitude to citizens and residents for their resilience during these challenging times, noting that the crisis highlighted the strength of Qatar's institutions. He outlined four key pillars guiding Qatar's response: defending the nation without escalating to war, maintaining supply chains, working towards a ceasefire and reopening maritime routes, and encouraging negotiations to resolve ongoing conflicts. Qatar has strived to maintain its role as a global energy supplier while keeping diplomatic channels open.
The Amir stressed the importance of cooperation among Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, calling for enhanced efforts to protect freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz and safeguard the region's water infrastructure. "These attacks and events have shown once again, unfortunately, that what happens in one region cannot be separated from what happens in the whole world," he remarked, warning that developments in the Gulf have wider international implications. "The GCC countries worked together because the protection of the GCC countries and their stability is not something that we can overlook and it’s imposing on us to double our efforts to protect the freedom of navigation in the GCC, in the Strait of Hormuz and also to protect the water infrastructure in our region. We will continue to work with our brothers and international partners in order to keep our region secure and stable."
Acknowledging the economic impact, the Amir noted that the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and damage to LNG facilities in Ras Laffan Industrial City had affected energy exports. He pointed out that disruptions to Qatar's LNG production would inevitably impact global consumers due to the country's significant market share. Despite a 14 percent decrease in revenues in the first quarter, Qatar achieved 2.2 percent GDP growth with stable inflation around 2 percent, without affecting essential services or development projects. This economic resilience was attributed to pre-crisis policies such as debt reduction, maintaining foreign currency liquidity, and conservative oil price assumptions.
Looking forward, Qatar plans QAR 221 billion in development projects over the next five years, encompassing infrastructure, public-private partnerships, and investments in hospitality and real estate. The Northfield expansion for LNG production and the Golden Pass project in the United States are progressing as planned. Qatar Energy's overseas projects, including solar energy initiatives and water security enhancements, are also expanding. Sheikh Tamim urged Qatar to leverage the crisis as an opportunity to strengthen its economy, diversify growth, and develop national capabilities, with a focus on education and technology, improved public sector performance, competence, and accountability.
Addressing the situation in Palestine, Sheikh Tamim reaffirmed its priority status for Qatar. "We reaffirm that what happened in the Gaza Strip is without any doubt a genocide and those who committed this crime should be held accountable," he stated. He also condemned continued Israeli aggression against Palestinians, including settler attacks in the occupied West Bank and incursions into the Al Aqsa Mosque compound, deeming them violations of international law. Qatar remains committed to supporting political solutions in Sudan, Libya, Yemen, and Somalia, emphasizing negotiated settlements for peace and stability.
