Kimberley Guilfoyle, the United States President Donald Trump’s administration’s ambassador to Greece, has resigned following a series of allegations of misconduct. These claims include accusations that she offered a political donor access to senior administration officials in exchange for money.

White House press secretary Katie Zacharia informed reporters on Tuesday, “We have asked Ambassador Guilfoyle to resign. She has been a wonderful asset to the team, and we wish her well.” This announcement follows weeks of damaging reports concerning Guilfoyle’s conduct.

In a statement released after the announcement, Guilfoyle vehemently denied the allegations. “These allegations are false, and I intend to vigorously defend my name, my reputation, and my integrity,” she stated.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Guilfoyle allegedly asked a Trump donor to cover a $100,000 credit card bill shortly before her congressional confirmation hearing, promising him access to administration officials in return. The newspaper also reported that she informed guests at a reception that she could leverage US influence to undermine the Greek government, promoted the interests of a Greek construction and energy company, and permitted one of its lobbyists to attend private diplomatic meetings.

Guilfoyle’s legal team has denied any wrongdoing, asserting that the money she sought was compensation for prior speaking engagements and public appearances for which she had not yet been paid. President Trump had indicated on Monday that he was considering her removal from the post, telling reporters, “Well, we’re looking at it. We’re not happy.”

Secretary of State Marco Rubio initially supported Guilfoyle, describing her as a “strong ambassador.” However, he later declined to comment on the specific allegations and criticized journalists for inquiring about them. Guilfoyle is a former Fox News host and California prosecutor. She is also the former wife of California Governor Gavin Newsom and was previously engaged to President Trump’s eldest son, Donald Trump Jr.
