Israel has repatriated 22 ancient artifacts, originally stolen from Greece, in a significant cultural exchange that underscores the deepening relationship between the two nations. Officials from both Greece and Israel did not disclose specifics regarding the discovery of these artifacts within Israel or the exact circumstances of their illicit removal from Greece. However, the Israel Antiquities Authority’s Theft Prevention Unit was credited with locating the items, as stated by Pninat Yanay, Israel’s ambassador to Greece. The Greek Minister of Culture, Lina Mendoni, formally received the collection from the Israel Antiquities Authority during a ceremony at the National Archaeological Museum in Athens. Minister Mendoni remarked, “It is the first time that Israel has returned antiquities to Greece, marking the starting point of closer cooperation between the two countries for the protection of cultural heritage.” She further emphasized, “Every return of a cultural object to its place of origin has a broader symbolic and moral dimension.” The returned artifacts comprise 15 Attic vases, six Corinthian vases, and a bronze female statuette, with their origins dating between 700 BC and 320 BC. Ambassador Yanay expressed that this repatriation establishes “the conditions for further strengthening cooperation between Greece and Israel.” This cultural gesture occurs amidst a period of enhanced energy and defense collaboration between Greece and Israel, notably highlighted by a substantial $3.5 billion defense deal signed in August for Israel to construct the Achilles Shield, a multi-layered air defense system in Greece. This agreement represents the largest defense deal between the two countries and is one of the most significant export agreements in Israel’s recent history.
