A 19-year-old from Palatine, Illinois, has been arrested in connection with an alleged plot to carry out a mass shooting, with a Hindu place of worship reportedly being a potential target. Alexandros Paporakis was taken into custody on Sunday following reports of concerning electronic communications he had sent. Palatine police confirmed the arrest on Wednesday.

During a search of Paporakis’s residence, authorities discovered a rifle, numerous loaded rifle magazines, and hundreds of additional rounds of ammunition. A tactical vest containing body armor and a patch associated with white supremacist extremism was also found. According to prosecutors from the Cook County State’s Attorney’s office, a coworker of Paporakis informed the police that the suspect openly identified as a white supremacist at work and expressed a desire to harm Indian people.

Detectives also recovered a document titled “Why I fought: A.K.A.: (Aurora Shooter’s Manifesto),” which contained white supremacist and extremist sentiments, including references to violence against South Asians, particularly Indians. Law enforcement officials believe Paporakis may have intended to execute his attack on Sunday, with a Hindu temple in Aurora, located approximately 40 miles (65km) southwest of Palatine, being a possible target. However, the police stated that the specific intended location is still under investigation, with the FBI providing assistance in the probe.

Paporakis is facing felony charges for making a terrorist threat and possessing an unlawful weapon. He appeared for a detention hearing on Wednesday, and his next court date is scheduled for late October. The arrest comes amid concerns raised by human rights advocates about a recent surge in hate incidents against South Asians in the United States, attributed to escalating anti-immigration policies and the proliferation of white supremacist ideology.
