At least 27 students and a teacher have tragically lost their lives in Peshawar, Pakistan, following the catastrophic collapse of a school roof during class hours on Thursday. Authorities have confirmed the grim toll, with fears mounting that the number of fatalities will increase as rescue operations continue at the privately run Al Khair Education Centre.
District emergency officer Iftikhar Khan stated that rescue teams have extricated approximately 45 children from the debris, but he indicated that more students are believed to be still buried. Government official Bilal Faizi reported that rescue teams are diligently working to recover bodies and transport the injured to medical facilities.
According to Mohammad Asim, spokesperson for Lady Reading Hospital, at least 20 injured individuals and the majority of those who perished were brought to the city's Lady Reading Hospital. A rescue official explained that the roof of an upper floor gave way, falling onto the classrooms below and causing both levels to cave in. The devastating incident occurred in the midst of the school day.
Peshawar police chief Mian Saeed revealed that out of the 110 students inside the classrooms when the roof collapsed, most under the age of 13, only 47 had been successfully rescued. He attributed the collapse to a weak building structure, citing excessive weight from construction on the roof as the cause. An investigation into the disaster has been ordered by the authorities.
