Hezbollah MP Hassan Fadlallah stated on Thursday that an explosive-laden vehicle intercepted by the Lebanese Armed Forces belongs to the Iran-backed group. Fadlallah indicated that Hezbollah had proactively informed Lebanese authorities of their ownership of the vehicle as soon as it was seized. He asserted that the vehicle's contents were intended for use against the Israeli occupation, emphasizing that Hezbollah's weaponry is exclusively directed at the Israeli enemy.
The Lebanese Armed Forces announced on Monday the seizure of 200kg of explosives, thwarting a smuggling operation originating from Syria via the Hermel border region. Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam declared a zero-tolerance policy for the investigation and stated the government would not permit any actions that jeopardize the nation's security, safety, and stability. This interception, one of three similar incidents in recent weeks, occurs amidst increasing pressure on the Lebanese government to disarm Hezbollah and consolidate all weaponry under state control.
Hezbollah has maintained a defiant stance against disarmament, asserting that any discussions regarding its arsenal can only commence after Israel ceases its attacks on Lebanon and withdraws from occupied Lebanese territories. Tensions between Israel and Hezbollah have escalated significantly since the onset of the Gaza war in October 2023. The current conflict escalated on March 2, when Hezbollah launched missiles into Israel, reportedly in support of Iran's regional actions. Israel responded with a substantial military campaign, resulting in over 4,000 casualties and the destruction of numerous villages in southern Lebanon, a region where Israel continues to maintain occupation.
Direct negotiations between Israel and Lebanon, facilitated by the United States, have yielded minimal progress concerning Hezbollah's disarmament or Israel's withdrawal. The recent seizure of the explosive-laden vehicle has heightened concerns about the potential for renewed political assassinations in Lebanon, a country with a history of such incidents. In a separate event, approximately 250kg of TNT-type explosives and 250kg of C4 were discovered in a truck en route to Beirut.
Prime Minister Salam acknowledged the public's anxiety regarding the intercepted truck and its cargo, particularly noting that C4 has been implicated in several prominent political assassinations in modern Lebanese history. Fadlallah, however, characterized the Prime Minister's remarks as an inflammatory campaign designed to incite internal division, reaffirming Hezbollah's commitment to defending and liberating their land. Historically, the 2000s and early 2010s saw numerous attacks, including killings and attempted assassinations, targeting opponents of the Syrian regime and its Lebanese ally, Hezbollah, often using explosives. Notably, former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafic Hariri was killed in a 2005 bombing, an attack for which Hezbollah members were convicted by the UN's Special Tribunal for Lebanon.
