Irish novelist Sally Rooney has confirmed that her books have been withdrawn from sale in the United Kingdom. This decision stems from her public support for Palestine Action, an organization designated as terrorist by the British government. Faber, Rooney's publisher, stated on Wednesday that the withdrawal was due to an "unconscionable situation" where they "cannot pass on UK earnings to Sally Rooney for her work." Rooney informed BBC News that continuing to publish her work in the UK could be considered a "serious criminal offence." She emphasized her commitment to transparency regarding her beliefs and her readiness to face the repercussions. While ebook editions have been removed, some physical copies remain available in UK stores. Rooney is celebrated for her acclaimed novels, including 'Normal People' and 'Conversations With Friends,' which have achieved global sales in the millions and were adapted into BBC television series. The UK government outlawed Palestine Action in July 2025, following an incident where activists protested Britain's military support for Israel's actions in Gaza by entering a Royal Air Force base and damaging aircraft. Membership or support for the group in the UK carries a potential penalty of up to 14 years in prison. Following the ban, Rooney penned an article in the Irish Times, asserting her continued support for Palestine Action and accepting the label of a "supporter of terror" under UK law if necessary. She has previously stated her intention to use her earnings from novels and adaptations to support the group. In September 2025, Rooney was unable to travel to the UK for an award ceremony due to concerns about potential arrest. Independent MP Jeremy Corbyn, who himself has been barred from entering Israel for his pro-Palestine stance, criticized the situation as an example of the "complete absurdity of the proscription of Palestine Action." He further commented that it is a "stain on this government" that the public cannot access the work of a prominent literary talent. Labour MP John McDonnell also released a statement expressing his desire for UK readers not to be deprived of Rooney's writing.
