The Philippine tennis federation has commended young talent Alex Eala for significantly boosting the sport's profile in the country. They highlighted her commitment to representing the Philippines at the 2026 Asian Games, even with the potential for penalties.

Eala faced the possibility of a substantial fine for opting out of the WTA's mandatory China Open to compete for the Philippines at the Japan Asian Games. Although she was eliminated in the semi-finals in Nagoya by Wang Xiyu, her dedication did not go unnoticed. Eala has since experienced early exits in tournaments in Singapore and Wuhan.

However, the Philippine Tennis Association (PHILTA) believes she has already made a profound impact. PHILTA secretary general John Rey Tiangco stated, “Alex Eala has already achieved what many once thought impossible. She has single-handedly put the Philippines on the world tennis map.” He further elaborated, “Her rise to world No 18, her WTA title, and her victories over some of the world's best players are milestones that have changed the landscape of Philippine tennis.”

Tiangco also praised Eala's decision to play for her country, contrasting it with other athletes who chose to compete in China. “We are equally grateful for her decision to represent our country at the Asian Games, putting the Philippine flag ahead of other opportunities.”

He added, “At this level of competition, victories and defeats are part of the journey. What matters is Alex's determination to keep improving, her discipline, and her commitment to the sport. Alex has already won something bigger than any single tournament. She has inspired a nation and opened doors for the next generation of Filipino tennis players.”

In other news, Indonesia's Janice Tjen concluded her Wuhan Open campaign on Thursday. American Ann Li, who previously defeated top seed Aryna Sabalenka, advanced to the quarter-finals with a 6-1, 7-6 (1) win over Tjen. Li is set to face seventh seed Iga Swiatek of Poland in the next round. Swiatek achieved her 150th career WTA 1000 win on Thursday.
