A tragic helicopter crash in a remote region of northern Kenya has resulted in the deaths of all seven people on board, including an Ecuadorian official and an American journalist. The incident occurred at 9:13am local time (06:13 GMT) on Wednesday while the aircraft was flying from the Loisaba Conservancy to the Ewaso Nyiro area in Samburu County.
According to the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority, an official investigation is currently under way. David Nkoroi, the police commander for Samburu, confirmed that all seven occupants perished in the accident. Ecuador’s Transport Minister Roberto Luque later stated that the country’s intelligence chief Michele Sensi-Contugi and his wife, Stephany Hollihan, were among the victims. Sensi-Contugi, 42, served as the head of Ecuador’s National Intelligence Center.
Additionally, US broadcaster NBCUniversal confirmed that Jose Alberto Suarez, who served as president and manager for regional stations, was among the deceased. A spokesperson for the United States Department of State verified that five US citizens were killed in the crash, and the US Embassy is currently providing consular assistance.
The aircraft, a Eurocopter EC130 B4 owned by Lady Lori Helicopters and operating a charter flight for travel company &Beyond, went down in a rugged area near Mount Ololokwe. Tropic Air Kenya dispatched two helicopters to assist in search and rescue efforts, while the Kenya Red Cross joined multiagency response teams. Recovery operations faced delays due to ongoing flames at the crash site, leaving some bodies trapped in the wreckage as rescue efforts continued.
