Bogus agencies are actively targeting individuals in India with deceptive job advertisements for positions in the UAE and Europe. These fraudulent operations lure unsuspecting applicants with false promises of employment and residency, demanding payment in return.

In response, the Indian embassy in Abu Dhabi and the Consulate General of India in Dubai have issued an advisory, urging Indian nationals to exercise extreme caution when engaging with private visa and migration agencies, particularly those based outside India, including some operating within the Emirates.

The missions have reported receiving a significant number of complaints from individuals, primarily from southern Indian states, and through welfare associations. These complaints detail agencies advertising employment opportunities and residency visa services for third countries, with a notable focus on European nations. Social media platforms are frequently used for these deceptive advertisements, and many victims have already transferred funds from India.

To safeguard against these scams, the missions advise prospective job applicants against relying solely on social media advertisements or the assurances of private visa-processing agencies. It is crucial to independently verify visa requirements, application procedures, and authorized channels directly with the embassy or consulate of the intended destination country. Applicants are also strongly encouraged to consult official government websites for the most current immigration information before making any payments or disclosing personal documents. A stern warning is issued against anyone promising overseas jobs or residency permits in exchange for payment.

This recent advisory follows a similar warning issued by the Indian embassy in Abu Dhabi in August concerning unauthorized individuals offering consular services. Previous warnings highlighted that scammers often target Indian citizens, especially blue-collar workers, by posing as agents who claim to facilitate services such as emergency certificates, exit permits, Emirates ID, visa regularization, and employment arrangements.

In some alarming instances, fraudsters have obtained victims' facial images and fingerprint scans under false pretenses. This sensitive biometric data may then be misused for illicit financial transactions, opening bank accounts, or obtaining loans and credit cards in the victims' names without their knowledge or consent, potentially leading to severe financial liabilities and legal repercussions, including fines, travel bans, or imprisonment.

The missions emphasize the importance of verifying the credentials of anyone offering consular or immigration-related services before sharing biometric data or other sensitive personal information.

Passport-Related Scams Also Highlighted

Adding to the concerns, India's Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) recently issued a warning regarding passport-related fraud. Citizens are cautioned about individuals impersonating agents or police officials who promise expedited processing, guaranteed approval, or immediate appointments in exchange for money and personal information. These fraudsters may also create deceptive websites that mimic official passport portals to illicitly collect application fees, banking details, and identity documents.

Further complicating matters, fake police verification calls are being used to threaten victims with delays, passport cancellation, or legal action unless they pay a fine or divulge personal information. Scammers are also offering fraudulent passport updates, renewals, and delivery services to extract money and sensitive data.

The CBI reiterates that no agent possesses the authority to guarantee passport approval or secure special access for urgent processing. The agency provided crucial tips to help citizens avoid falling victim to recruitment, visa, and passport scams:

  • Do not pay anyone who guarantees passport approval, urgent processing, or a confirmed overseas job.
  • Avoid clicking on suspicious links or making payments through unverified websites.
  • Never share bank PINs, passwords, or other confidential banking information.
  • Do not respond to calls that threaten passport cancellation, legal action, or police intervention unless a fine is paid.
  • Refrain from sharing copies of passports, identity documents, or biometric information with unknown individuals or unauthorized agencies.
