India and West Indies are set to clash in the decisive fifth T20 International on Saturday, with the five-match series perfectly poised at 2-2. This thrilling white-ball tour has seen record-breaking performances from the West Indies, pushing the T20 World Cup holders to their absolute limit. Al Jazeera Sport previews the must-watch finale at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.
The tour commenced with a three-match One-Day International series, where India established an unassailable 2-0 lead with commanding eight-wicket victories in Thiruvananthapuram and Guwahati. Despite India posting a formidable 351-7, largely thanks to KL Rahul's 129 off 87 balls in New Chandigarh, West Indies captain Shai Hope led a remarkable chase. His unbeaten 162 off 143 balls guided his team to a five-wicket win, marking the West Indies' highest ODI run chase.
India bounced back in the T20 leg, securing an eight-wicket victory in the first match with 5.2 overs to spare. Despite fifties from Shai Hope and Sherfane Rutherford, West Indies were bowled out for 171, with Naman Dhir taking three wickets for India. However, the momentum shifted dramatically in the second T20. Shai Hope continued his stellar form, smashing an unbeaten 102 off just 45 balls to lead the West Indies to their highest successful T20 run chase, finishing at 252-4 in response to India's 249-5. Hope's explosive innings included nine sixes and six boundaries.
India regained the series lead in a tight third match, clinching a narrow 14-run victory. After being bowled out on the final ball, India set a target of 223, with Abhishek Sharma contributing a rapid 69 off 30 balls. Arshdeep Singh was instrumental in restricting West Indies to 209-7 with three wickets.
The fourth T20 saw another masterclass from Shai Hope, who registered his second century of the series. The West Indies posted a massive 247-3, with Hope remaining unbeaten on 102. His innings, featuring nine sixes and four fours, set a new record for a West Indies batter in a T20 International and was the second-highest first-innings score against India in T20s. Despite a quickfire 56 off 23 balls from India's Sanju Samson, Keemo Paul's exceptional five-wicket haul secured a 24-run victory for the West Indies, leveling the series.
Following his Player of the Match performance in the fourth T20, Shai Hope humorously expressed concern about excess baggage fees due to his numerous awards. "To be honest, they are a bit heavy, and we have got to look at the luggage weight," he quipped. "I think we are going to have some problems going back home."
